• Evan Tingle
  • I'm an astrophysicist/technical assistant working in the Director's Office for the Chandra X-ray Observatory. When I'm not looking at stars, I maintain databases, manage webpages, and research the non-astronomical aspects of X-ray astronomy.
  • I live in Somerville with my wife and hound.

  • Projects
  • In an effort to save on 3rd party software, I developed a plagiarism checking system in Python that compares submitted proposals against a massive custom vector database representing almost every published paper on astronomy.
  • I redesigned the main Chandra science webpage, cxc.harvard.edu, incorporating accessibility and responsiveness principles. To facilitate webpage updates among a development team, I built a Subversion SCM wrapper system to streamline code updates.
  • We realized after an AAS meeting that the Chandra handout materials were either too dense and technical or too basic for students and scientists just entering the world of X-ray astronomy. A colleague and I wrote the Chandra Pocket Guide and An X-ray Data Primer to fill this gap.
  • I am responsible for Chandra's presence at the biannual American Astronomical Society meetings and develop scientific and public outreach materials. A colleague and I created an outreach activity called "Catching X-ray Light" to demonstrate grazing incidence in X-ray mirrors.
  • For the last several years I have been researching Cepheid companion stars. Using Hubble observations of ~70 Cepheids, we are looking for young companion stars to then observe in the X-ray band with Chandra and XMM-Newton. This tells us how these stars are formed, and gives insight into overall stellar formation.
  • NASA Headquarters tasked the Chandra Director's Office to determine if gender discrepancy existed in awarded proposal time on the telescope. Compiling the Chandra Gender Statistics entailed database creation/administration, data mining, data entry, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
  • katelevybookbinding.com is my wife's bookbinding portfolio website. It uses a standard responsive Bootstrap template that has been modified to her specifications.
